The key distinction is whether the supplier can demonstrate that its management practices, products, and manufacturing capabilities satisfy the requirements of the intended application.
How to Evaluate a High-Temperature Textile Supplier
Before purchasing fiberglass fabric, vermiculite-coated fabric, silica fabric, aluminized textile, or another thermal protection material, use the following checks to qualify the supplier.
1. Verify the Certification and Its Scope
Request a current certificate and check the issuing certification body, validity, covered locations, and activities. Confirm that the certificate applies to the relevant manufacturing operations rather than assuming it covers every site or product.
2. Review Product Specifications
Verify fiber composition, weave pattern, fabric weight, thickness, coating, reinforcement, and available widths. For thermal applications, distinguish between continuous operating temperature and peak temperature, and check the conditions under which each rating applies.
3. Request Relevant Test Documentation
Identify the performance properties that matter to the application. Depending on the hazard, these may include flame resistance, radiant heat transmission, molten metal splash resistance, abrasion resistance, or other specified properties.
Check that the report applies to the material or assembly being purchased. A test performed on a fabric alone does not automatically establish the performance of a finished insulation blanket, protective garment, or installed fire barrier.
4. Confirm Manufacturing and Customization Capabilities
Determine whether the supplier can provide the required fabric construction, coating, lamination, reinforcement, dimensions, and fabrication. For custom insulation covers or multilayer assemblies, confirm that the manufacturer understands the operating environment and design requirements.
5. Evaluate Application Suitability
Temperature rating alone is not enough to select a high-temperature textile. Consider:
A material intended for removable pipe insulation may not be suitable for radiant heat protection or molten metal splash exposure. Selection should be based on the complete set of operating conditions.
6. Confirm Compliance and Documentation Requirements
Establish which certifications, test reports, traceability records, and acceptance criteria are required before placing an order. This is particularly important when the material forms part of a safety system, regulated application, or customer-qualified assembly.
